What is Hygge? Is that even a word? Well of course it is – in Danish! And guess what, it defines the pajama lifestyle better than any English word ever could. It’s definitely going to take over as one of the hippest trends in fashion and décor. So get in on the ground floor and discover exactly what the hygge lifestyle is and how to embrace it.
What is Hygge?
Hygge is a Danish and Norwegian word that conveys a sense of coziness and comfort. It embraces the feelings of wellness and contentment. It’s a more common concept in Denmark than in Norway, and over the past few years it’s become a central component of Danish Culture.
Like any amazing concept, it’s being adopted here in the United States. In fact, it was word of the year in 2016! I don’t know why I’m just hearing about it now, but we here at Jama Time love the concept.
What is the Concept of Hygge?
The Danish concept of hygge pulls together a few English words into one notion. Think of security, contentment, comfort, and coziness all rolled into one ball of amazingness, and you’ll be close to understanding the concept of hygge.
Hygge is coming home to a comfortable house and curling up with a hot cup of tea and a good book. It’s enjoying the warmth and glow of a lightly smoldering fire. It’s embracing the coziness of the familiar, and being content with what we have.
Hygge is all about embracing the small comforts in life and not only being happy with them, but cherishing them. In that regard, it’s very similar to the Yogi concept of mindfulness. Both lifestyles are about being present in the moment and being content with what you have. The difference lies in the coziness factor. Hygge was developed in a much colder climate, and it can be difficult to be present in and appreciate a moment when you are freezing your butt off.
That’s why Hygge is all about comfort and coziness in addition to mindfulness and being present. The cold sucks, but there are ways to find comfort in it and enjoy it. In doing this, you can fully embrace the hygge lifestyle.
What is a Hygge Lifestyle?
A hygge lifestyle is when you pull together all of the concepts of hygge and embrace them in your daily life. Hygge is living a life full of comfort, contentment, and wellness. It’s all about appreciating the small moments and making them feel special.
Some people would think that its mundane to come home from work in the middle of winter, when the sun has already set. They get depressed that there’s no more light, and make themselves a cup of tea and get ready for bed – while waiting for their real life to start. The Hygge lifestyle might have the exact same activities – work, tea, home, bed – but the difference is the attitude. When embracing the hygge lifestyle, you celebrate that cup of tea, and the warmth and coziness of your home. Boring is a state of mind, but learning to be comfortable in the moment helps alleviate that. You don’t have to be doing something all the time to be happy and content. Instead, accept the small moments for what they are – comfortable moments, cozy breaks from the hustle and bustle of real life. In doing so, you will truly embrace the hygge lifestyle.
How Jama Time fits in with the Hygge Lifestyle
When you imagine a life of comfort, coziness, and contentment, what do you picture? Do you see yourself in a warm room, snuggled up next to a fireplace, relaxing with a hot cup of tea against a luxurious lounging pillow?
What are you wearing?
You’re wearing pajamas, aren’t you? And maybe some warm socks, slippers, and your favorite robe? I know that’s what I’d be wearing.
Jama time is all about embracing hygge. We were into this lifestyle before we even knew it was a word. And then, when we discovered it, there was a serendipitous “aha” moment. We found a word that fully encompassed what Jama time is all about: Being comfortable all the time. Living your life in cozy contentment. Being happy with where you are at the moment and what you are doing. Jama time is more than just pajamas – it’s a lifestyle.
How Can I Embrace the Hygge Lifestyle?
The great thing about Hygge is that anyone can do it. It’s more about your mindset than about having stuff (though hygge décor is definitely becoming a thing. Think of an apartment filled with fluffy pillows, throw rugs, warm blankets, and fireplaces, and anything else that fills your heart with comfort.).
You can embrace the hygge lifestyle by being present in each moment and appreciating it for what it is. When you get home today and get out of work clothes and into your favorite pair of pajamas, take a moment to feel the softness on your skin. Appreciate the fact that you can come home and get into cozy pajamas. Make yourself a cup of tea (or your favorite winter drink) and breath in the aroma. Cherish the comfort of the hot steam and the delicate flavor as you take your first delicious sip.
Be present in every moment that you have in the comfort of your home this evening, rather than trying to think about every thing that you have to do tomorrow. Let all that go and enjoy the coziness of a warm home on a cold winter’s night. If you can do all those things, you’ll have truly embraced hygge.
